4 wild demonstrations which rocked Akufo-Addo’s government in one week

The second week of November 2018 has witnessed major events in some parts of Ghana including four wild demonstrations that rocked Akufo-Addo’s government.

There have been chaos in some places such as Adenta, Tarkwa, where residents protested violently against what they described as poor roads.

Also, graduate teachers who are unemployed have also demonstrated against the government asking to be employed.

There also has been the story of mortuary workers who threatened a demonstration.

Against this backdrop, YEN.com.gh brings you four demonstrations that have been registered against Akufo-Addo and his government in just a week.

1. Adenta footbridge demonstration:

In Adenta for instance, a neglected footbridge has caused the death of many, including a 16-year-old WASS student and a lady called Ataa, who died painfully leaving her twin sister.

In fact, it was the sad death of the WASS student which sparked the controversy leading to the demonstration at Adenta.

The demonstration was a violent one in which a stray bullet reportedly hit a mother and child.

According to the police, people were throwing all sorts of missiles, leading to the injury of many others.

Nevertheless, the demonstration yielded positive results because the government reassured the citizens that work would resume on the footbridges immediately, and reports have it that constructors are currently working on them.

Also, street lights along the Adenta-Madina Highway were seen working right on the night that the demonstration was held.

2. Tarkwa:

Residents of Tarkwa-Nsuta reportedly blocked the main Tarkwa-Takoradi road after a man died.

Prior to that, many deaths have reportedly been recorded on that stretch and the residents have blamed it on the bad nature of the road. They burned tyres and blocked the road to register their displeasure with the government.

3. Unemployed graduate teachers:

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that while protesting, these teachers also offered an apology to former president John Mahama for voting him out of government in 2016.

They claimed that the Akufo-Addo government has deceived them after many promises to get them posted after graduating from school have been left unfulfilled.

They narrated how tough life was for them because they are jobless. Some of the female teachers even said they were tempted to be “jumping from one man to the other” because life was indeed unbearable for them.

4. Mortuary workers:

The mortuary workers threatened to demonstrate against bad working conditions.

They even issued a warning to the public that people should postpone their deaths else they would rot if they choose to die at a time they had laid down their tools.

However, their demonstration is still on hold as reports have it that the Ministry of Health was engaging them to make their working conditions better.

Meanwhile, the president has reiterated his government’s quest to make Ghana's economy a better one, according to the 2019 Budget read by the Minister of Finance.

This follows the complaints by many Ghanaians that he has deceived them because his promises of making living better have not been realized.

In an earlier report by YEN.com.gh, one woman revealed how her husband could no longer satisfy her in bed because he was under pressure to live in Ghana’s expensive economy.

Therefore, she believes the president “must go”.

Other market women, in another report by YEN, also revealed how they feel deceived by Akufo-Addo because they were experiencing hardship in their menial job as a result of high cost of goods and services.
