$3000 cash reward for Africa Games gold medalists

Government would reward each gold medalist in individual sports of this year’s Africa Games slated for Rabat, Morocco with $3000.

This forms part of the $1.28m budget approved for the games and according to the Director-General (DG) of the National Sports Authority, Prof. Peter Twumasi, bronze medalists and silver medalists in the individual competitions would also walk home with $2000 and $1000 respectively.

A statement issued by the DG who is also chairman of the International Games and Competitions Committee (IGCC) athletes who bag gold in team sports would share $2000 with winners in bronze and silver pocketing $1500 and $1000 respectively.

Ghana would be travelling with 139 contingents to the 12th edition of the competition which consists of 91 athletes and 48 coaches and officials and according to the NSA boss the budget approved would cover expenditure for the entire team.

“We presented a budget to Government through the Youth and Sports Ministry and we have gotten approval, so it is important we made it available to Ghanaians”.

He explained that the approval of the budget came after the Ministry of Youth and Sports under the leadership of, Isaac Asiamah, gave his seal of approval and in the spirit of transparency decided to inform the tax payer about it.

“We presented a budget to Government through the Youth and Sports Ministry and we have gotten approval, so it is important we made it available to Ghanaians”.

Prof Twumasi noted that the country was presenting a lean contingent of athlete who are hopeful of winning medals and praised the IGCC for doing a good job so far.

“The IGCC team has done a great job since it was inaugurated to oversee all issues relating to the upcoming African Games in Morocco”, he said.
