Dr Jemima Araba Dennis-Antwi annual award instituted

The Dr Jemima Araba Dennis-Antwi Annual Best Performance Award to recognise hard working and dedicated deserving members of the Ghana College of Nursing and Midwives (GCNM) has been instituted by the first President of the College and her family.

Dr Jemima Araba Dennis-Antwi, the first President of the GCNM, who announced this at the 3rd Annual General Meeting and seminar of the College at Gomoa Fetteh, near Kasoa, said the award was instituted in perpetuity “as far as the Lord will allow me and my family”

She said the Maiden award, a plague and a cash prize of GHC1000.00, would be given at the end of the two-day AGM and Seminar and urged other fellows to join her in that direction to encourage the residents to aspire to higher heights.

Dr Dennis-Antwi had successfully completed her tenure of office and a new President will be elected at the end of the Seminar to govern the affairs of the College.

On the promotion of specialist education, she said, to achieve the College second mandate of Continual Professional Development (CPDs), the Academic Board, working through teams, initiated the design of packages in the areas of Preceptorship, Paediatrics (Sickle cell disease, new-born care, Nutrition), Emergency and Neuroscience.

The others, she said, were Neonatal Nursing, Oncology and Palliative Care, adding that, the packages were at different stages of development.

“I am however proud to announce that between 2015-2017, series of trainings were conducted in Basic Emergency Obstetric and New-born Care and Preceptorship, with funding support from Millennium Accelerated Funds and the Maternal and Child Survival Programme of USAID, ” she said.

“Further work has been done on the preceptorship package and is ready for roll-out, as the documents are at printing stages. Our paediatric packages are already at the implementation stages with some trainings already conducted.”

Dr Dennis-Antwi expressed her gratitude to the Almighty God for the humble opportunity to serve her profession and humanity.

“I also thank immensely my senior colleagues, first Governing Council and the entire body of fellows for electing me to serve as the first President and also the first Rector of the College. To the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, I say thanks so much for the leadership and support in building the College.”

She also expressed her profound appreciation to the Rector, the Vice President for making her term of office memorable and wished the incoming President all the success and God’s direction in pushing ahead the College.
