The burial rites of the late Dakpema Naa, Alhaji Alhassan Dawuni, are underway in Tamale.

The custodians of the tradition performed a series of rituals on Sunday, 15 July 2018, before the burial ceremony.

As part of tradition, the deceased will be carried shoulder high in a palanquin and a procession will be held through the principal streets of Tamale. This is to signify that the chief has joined his ancestors.

According to the spokesperson for the late Dakpema Naa, Sabaa Naa Abass Salifu, the remains of the chief will be sent to a tomb where he is expected to be laid to rest.

As tradition demands, nine shots will be fired by musketeers to officially communicate the death of the chief to the public.
