Instant justice, otherwise known as mob action, is so commonplace in Ghana that our incipient democracy and the rule of law suffocate under its intense pressure.

The act takes many forms and shapes: flogging suspected robbers to death; slashing suspected criminals; stripping suspects naked and beating them with blocks, sticks and iron rods till they die; subjecting suspects to humiliating and degrading treatments and sometimes setting them ablaze. Mob action is gradually assuming a posture of an unquestioned culture of executing instant ‘justice’ without recourse to the court. Mob action is steadily developing into an ugly tumour on the near immaculate face of our present 1992 Constitution.

Mob action, put bluntly, is an embarrassment to our democracy. It casts an ugly slur on our national identity. It represents imprints of visible tokens of incivility and brutishness. It is a criminal method of punishing suspected criminals. Instance justice is sordid and repulsive; its frequency represents a reversal of our democratic laurels.

It is a flagrant departure from the rule of law; it is a major democratic defect; it is an evidence of the breakdown of law and order, and reveals the inadequacies of our system of justice. It is a major onslaught to our criminal justice system, and an embarrassment to the country. The country is likely to drift deeper into the quagmire of lawlessness if the problem of instant justice is not checked immediately.

Almost invariably, no month ends without a suspected criminal being lynched by an angry mob. The dangers of mob action on our country are too numerous to name. One inherent danger of this sordid act is the real likelihood of victimising innocent persons who are mistaken for criminals. About 70% of the time, it is innocent people who are killed. God Help Ghana.

I heard an Assembly man defending anoise making block factory located in a residential area, saying where the offender was making the noise with his machine was a commercial area, when in actual fact such machines cannot even be located in a commercial area.

So I am not at all surprised the Assembly man did not verify the true identity of the soldier.

They have suffered from arm robberies and as usual our police forces do nothing. Now they see a young stranger with a gun running around not sure where he is going. They wrongly assume he is a criminal.
If the police have served the community well and done something about the recent robberies the people would have just called the police to check this stranger out.
Let those who get paid to police do their job.

What we have to know is that criminals necessarily have to hide their weapons for fears of being spotted while officers don't need to necessarily do unless in areas suspected to honour criminals who could attack such when suspected to be an officer.

Having a pistol on you cannot save you from an AK47 or machine gun. A pistol cannot hit someone at 100 metres.

I believe mob-lynching happen because of ignorance in that citizens do not know it is against the law. They should be a massive campaign and education about the consequences of mob-lynching across the country. This campaign must start now in schools, offices, public places, villages towns etc. Let the citizens understand when some is arrested for an alleged crime, the first point of contact is the police or the person be taken to the police station without causing any harm to the person. In this sad news, I can't understand why an assemblyman should mobilise people to kill someone. Why? This is purely lawlessness. Parliament must act immediately on this sad incident. This is not the first time innocent citizens are killed by mob-lynching. Enough is enough. What a country we are living in.

But I feel the assembly man could have escorted him to his base or phone his office to verify his identity. But in Ghana mob instance justice has become part of our was of dealing with suspects. Remember the lady who was striped naked alleged to have Stolen her boy friend's money.
many have died before they could even explain their side of the story. The NCCE,min of communication, police,teachers have a duty to educate and raise awareness. Our constitution spells it out clearly that'' one not guilty until the courts of law has established evidence Against him or her.Also police brutalities against suspects to confess to crime has a bad influence on our society, most people in Ghana feels a thief should be lynched. Already report available indicated that a police officer was beaten with impunity at the flagstaff house under the watch of the president .Again recent report of paramilitary men raided a courtroom in kumasi and freed their colleagues standing trial,all these went unpunished.We also have report of people who attacked a police station and burnt a police patrol car and freed four of their members all is said to have taken place in the Eastern region.Moreover ECG staff within the same region were not left out as they attacked and burnt some of their cars.These and others to me indicates that Ghana under Nana Akufo Addo is closer to political instability.
