Dear Mrs Ofosu Armaah,
You dont know me ut I have followed your career for about 45 years and my verdict is you are a GEM of a journalist and a priceless GIFT to Ghana.
Your principled stand in 1979 when you boldly refused to be confirmed by the JJ Rawlings junta as the editor of the Daily Graphic on the grounds that the appointment was coming from the wrong authority endeared you to me. Having cautioned the regime and the youth that yes, "A revolution is not a tea party, but it is not a pigsty" it took guts to stand up and reject an improper offer whose intention obviously was to silence and compromise you.
I have given the verdict of the discerning on you already. I can only wish you well as you finally bow out.
My regards to George and that young lady who I met in Lagos.
All the best.

As a typical Ghanaian woman, Elizabeth tells us about her birthday but not how old she is. This is a bit strange because in the old school, age is respected as a fount of wisdom. She is of a generation that doesn't mock at old age.
But these days it's easy to find out such things. Ohene was born in 1945 and finished Mawuli School, where her father was a teacher, in 1964. She finished Legon in 1967 graduating in English. She became editor of Daily Graphic at a relatively young age and was also a minister of state in some regime. She did a few courses abroad and her journalistic skills are quite good even if they cannot be exactly described as extraordinary.
The point is that, at 72, Ohene isn't that old. She's a few months younger than Akufo-Addo and a full three years younger than Osarfo Marfo. Ohene has been a member of NPP all these years and her brothers also have been members of the party. She is one of the few prominent Ewes who are members of NPP - a party most Ewes regard as being too dominated by Akans.
If 75 year-old Osafo Marfo is brought into 72-year old Akufo-Addo's inner government, what about Elizabeth Ohene who has stood by the party all these years? Instead, the Ewe ministerial posts go to John Amewu and Dzamesi not because they're competent in any way but only because they happened to have stood by the party in all these years and have to be rewarded for that in the president's efforts to have some Ewe representation in his government.
This is the dillema of the NPP. It is also the dillema of Ohene, who at 72, is feeling too old to continue as a columnist of a paper she's long been associated with while people older than her are in charge of the affairs of the country.
Of course, being a weekly columnist can be a tedious thing. You can't always come up with great topics to write on a weekly basis unless you are as talented as Alistaire Cooke delivering letters from America.
And, for all her great writing, Ohene is no Alistaire Cooke...

For the uninformed or uninquisitive mind, your pieces are just prose or paragraphs on paper. I wonder what literature teachers teach these days!
In any case we are in the year 2017 and JDM has handed over power and moved on(at least that is what we believe).
Your blossomed at Graphic, survived Papa J's xenophobic cleansing, thrived at the BBC and reconnected with the Graphic and we don't believe a bit that you would lay down your pen any soon!

I have always admired Elizabeth Ohene for her wisdom, tenacity, truthfulness, open mindedness and fairness. She was my favorite journalist when I was a student at Legon between 1979-82. I have followed her career with the BBC and later as a Minister in Kuffour's govt. She reminds me fondly of journalists we have here in America, especially those of New York Times. They are courageous, fair, dogged in pursuit of news, fearless and passionate in their profession. In Ghana, I fell in love with Daily Graphic as it was called then because of editors like Elizabeth Ohene. May God enrich your life Ma,am. If you happen to come to America for a visit, send me a message and a few of us will honor you for a good job done. Happy Birthday. Next Year God willing we will send you a card via NPP Headquarters in Accra.

If Kufuor's girlfriend is seeking attention from Nana Addo who cares? Kufuor used the Ghanaian tax payer's money to build a mansion for this woman at Abutia. They think nobody knows. When she was then minister of education responsible for terciary education what change did she bring to the sector? When NDC won the election she ran away back to London thinking someone would chase her. When no one did she became ashamed of herself. Now that npp has won the election she has come back to make noise. Idiot of no equal match.
