Mr. Former MP, is it so bad to be a Ghanaian?
You have had a chance to become an MP and thus have, I assume, represented Togoland adequately. No one has denied Togoland representation. There were no political boundaries before colonialism so you cannot claim any territory that anybody took from Togoland. Any boundary was established by the colonial masters and the colonial masters did with the boundaries what they pleased.
Palestinians had their land carved off and given to Europeans and many of them were driven out to scatter around the Middle East. Do you have it so bad that you have to go through the intellectual exercise just to declare a plebiscite illegal? What if French Togoland claim that all of Togoland was divided illegally and that they all belong as one country?
Sudan and South Sudan are examples of what happens. Often people who cannot compete to achieve their ambitions in the larger context think they can achieve them with division only to find out that the people who worked with them to achieve the division have the same ambition and are ready to fight for it. It often leads to unnecessary wars. Please be a Ghanaian and do the best you can with it; better yet, be an African. Put your efforts into making Africa better.

Even the Togoland that the writer is talking about is not a natural entity. It was a creation of the colonialists. The boundaries of Togoland were arbitrary and shifting all the time. How can Peki be in Gold Coast and Hohoe (which is related to Peki) be in Togoland? It's all unfair. Togoland comprised different tribes like half Gonja and other tribes in the north plus half of Ewes. It was too articifical to be called a country. Even Gold Coast is a colonial creation - artificial.
How can you say one colonial creation is different from another colonial creation?
It's long ago and the time to resurrect these things is past.
Time to let go, true true...

Thanks for your most sensible advice to the former MP and author of this Article. Obviously, his narrative may well be a Historical account worth learning but it does not de-legitimize the current National entity the former Togoland shares with the rest of the former Gold Coast.
We all could reach back into our memory to rake up reasons for intense nostalgia for lost glories of our Ancestral heritage. It would be more destructive to the lives of many of us today to opt for anything less than what our forebears have helped built into the Nationhood of Ghana than seeking better ways to share in the opportunities existing in our Union, be that be formal or not.
The legalities that the author referred to could as well be countered by the global acceptance of the UN Charter that recognizes Nationhood, today. And unless certain aspects of that Charter is irreparably breached by Ghana, the author's implicit wish for an Independent reconstituted Togoland would not come into being.
The Plebiscite that ushered Togoland to join Gold Coast and the Northern Territories conveyed the legal basis for our current Unitary State. So, the former MP could at best be wishing for the dead to resurrect at his whim.
He must as well be reminded that he could be held for instigating treason, as he could not indicate any hurtful treatment of his constituents and other former Togolese-Ghanaians that justifies the secession he is advocating for.
I think he is sour for losing his spot in Parliament. Why didn't he bring the issue up in Parliament when he was MP?
Long Live Ghana!!!

You sound peace loving but you are denying the integrity of a people being downthrodden with dehumanizing insults. Let us not pretend there is harmony in the uncompleted marriage of Togoland and Ghana. A log in a river can never become a crocodile. Let us call a spade a spade. Even those who created the artificial boundaries are correcting their misdeeds at home. The Berlin Wall is no longer dividing the Germans. Britain pulls out of the European Union. How can Western Togolanders forever remain "Plebians","Plebiscite Ghanaians", "Rat Shit Eaters", "Animals", "hewers of wood and drawers of water" in a country they have helped built to nobility?
Let us help them to establish their state and live on their own. After all they will still be with us even if they are independent. There will be better mutual respect for neighbors than what now goes on in the Ghanaian comon place.

So, in your estimation, a nation must be tribally homigenous? Who taught you that?
Again, you maintain that Togoland is to artificial to be a country, yet you concede that even Ghana is artificial. Where is your consistent?

Ghana did not vote to have Togolanders. Ghana cannot give them independence. Their destiny lies in their own hands. They voted for a union and it never came. Ghana's Independence Act does not include them. Why worry Ghana? As to sharing of common resources, we must remember that Nature unites us without our voting for it. Even the air we breath is decarbonized by vegetation across borders. We only have to reason as common neighbours.

The more I review this article, the more shallow the reasons for de-legitimizing Togoland's union with Gold Coast to form Ghana sounds to me.
It is not as if Ashanti and the Northern Territories that the British also ruled as Colonial entities enjoyed any better or more humane treatment by the British than the Togolese.
Besides, in terms of assets, the Ashantis had much more to lose in accepting a Statehood that virtually obliterated their Kingdom and confiscated their Natural Resources to, first, feed the sustenance of the Union Jack's might, and later, to be shared by all the component entities that formed Ghana.
If that argument of the British not allowing 'Independent' Togolese states to exist by themselves were the only argument, then we should as well refute the legal existence of all other Nations in the World that were ever Colonized by the Europeans.
So, the author ought to acknowledge the fact that while the Ashantis, for example, never had the liberty to choose whether or not they would like to join other parts of the Gold Coast to form one modern Nation, the people of Togoland had that opportunity in the Plebiscite, and they overwhelmingly chose to join the new State of Ghana. It must be noted that the Anlos led by Modesto Akpaloo and under his Anlo Youth Association Party, opposed S. G. Antor's Togolese Congress Party quest to reject becoming part of Ghana, even though both Togoland Parties later merged with others to form the United Party to oppose Nkrumah's CPP.
Moreover, it is very important to acknowlege that the rest of Ghana did not impose their will on Togoland, and has not subsequently diminished the access to development and growth for their Citizens any worse than any others elsewhere in Ghana.
When the motion for Federalism was tabled by the United Party comprising Busia's Ghana Congress Party (GCP), Dombo's Northern People's Party (NPP), Mumuni Bawumia's Muslim Association Party (MAP), Baffuor Akoto's National Liberation Movement (NLM), Modesto Akpaloo's Anlo Youth Association Party (AYAP), and S. G. Antor's Togolese Congress Party (TCP). But the motion was defeated and the Unitary State advocated by Nkrumah's CPP was adopted.
In fact, Togoland before the Germans, the French and the British could hardly be said to have any well-formed Independent State that could have survived on her own, and the various non-Ewe ethnic groups weren't voluntarily desirous of forming a separate Federal State with the Ewes across the Euro-defined boundaries under the French, Germans and the British. It was only after the 2nd World War that the small groups felt vulnerable and decided to stay either with the French Togolese or follow the British Togolese to form Ghana.
If we were all drawing on our nostalgic past and lost ethnic sovereignty, we would all clamor to return to our ancient Kingdoms. But that is almost impossible today. That is plainly simple. Individual feelings of personal loss in terms of political clout is not enough sensible reason to advocate for secession of our home areas from the Nation.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Let Kosi Kedem and Amenumey tell the whole world how beautiful and remarkable; how justifiable and blessed it is to exclude the Anlos, the Awudomes, the Pekis (part of the Gbis), the Tongus, the Someys and all of the Volta Triangle from the German and Togoland Treaty of Amity and Trade just to be suddenly annexed to the Gold Coast which was under the Bond of 1844. Does it befit the people of the Western Togoland to agree that part of their land and their people be left out as a worthless entities for a foreigner to eke out as a birthday gift to his relative? Are these two guys not justifying the slave trade, the colonial scramble for precious lands and people? Are these two guys not aware that it is abomination to steal someone's child, let alone give it out to another person as a gift. Can these two guys swear to the ancestors that the Volta Triangle in not part of their land? Posterity shall not cease to revenge neither shall it reverse the cosmic clock for the cycle of events to close for the coming Kingdom of Peace. These two guys clearly display the selfish attitude of those who betrayed their great grand ancestors into serfdom. Scholastic intellectualism is worthless before intuitive wisdom. The people know themselves more than historians can distort truth. Go to the Awudome People or the Anlos and the Tongus and inquire their relation with Nnotsie, you will regret you have become a traitor. More for you latter.

Brilliant arguments are now surfacing and I wish to congratulate the Homeland Study Group Foundaton,Prof.Amenumey and MP. Kosi Kedem.I pray that they should work hard to save the whole of their people but not to take to the usual divisiveness that usually make the Ewes not to progress despite their high potentials. Everybody knows that the British first took part of the Togoland for some hidden agenda. By the article of the former M.P. we can clearly deduce that the British and the French invaded Togoland which was never a military base of Germany. The creation of the Volta Triangle and the partitioning of Togoland clearly prove the secreat interest of the invaders especially the British in the western part of Togoland. It is now over to the Togolanders themselves to raise ONE VOICE and pull out. After all, Great Britain has pulled out of the European Union. Germany is reunified. Why should the Ewes be vehemently condemning each other perhaps because they forsee some green light. Even if some of them are bribed to sow division into their fight for self rule, these people should be careful and consider ending their life in being truly satisfied with what is noble and true.
They have all started well and I hope the will end well if the continue well. The Volta Triangle could become the worthiest nation in Africa if the Togolanders will wickedly deny them their share of the Togoland cake. For sure, the Volta Triangle is not Gold Coast. We who come nearest to them Geographically know very well. We take similar names like Mansa and Kofi but a name like Narteh and Larweh sound strange in the Volta Triangle. So, I fear for you if you will really forget your roots because you are now so much versed in what the colonial masters thought you to the extent that you will decide to fight to eliminate your own people in the struggle for self rule. I wonder If Kosi Kedem will not later find a way of excluding the Mamprusis and the Gonjas. For Professor Emeritus in Ewe history, there is no doubt his mouth is full and he has to forget his roots. But his generation could inherit the fruits of what he is sowing now. Please, do not bring UNITA, FNLA and MPLA tactics into Western Togoland. I believe the neo-colonialist can bribe you to do that.
After all your ancestors were bribed with tobacco. And you are all groomed in Modern Ghana where demanding and pocketing of gifts is not regarded as ccorruption, where offers to influence decisions shamelessly received as unwritten incomes.
