After the erection, someone goes to makeve a research on Gandhi ,realizes that he was a racist then he'll breaks lose.I find this to be very infantile with its polical backlash.When this Government came to power,they talked of going for some 3Bilion loan from China for some developmental projects. Without saying Jack,we descended heavily on the Chinese in the galamsey business, destroyed their property ,seized some and the worse was that their pictures were displayed in the media,ridiculed and deported.It took one of their Ministers to come to Ghana to resolve the issue but we lived to see the repercussions of that knee- jerk action that we took. Day in day out we hear of the Exim Bank of India advancing loans to the Ghana Government. All these wouldn't be possible if there wasn't a good relationship between India and Ghana.Forget about the fact that we are paying back.Now a whole Indian President comes to Ghana to donate a statue after all the pomp and pageantry,it was erected and the next moment pulled down.It makes me sick as Ghanaian. Competition of personalities, less impact. As you may also observe the Indian government saw a vacuum to project one of their heros on our premier university that produces our political leadership? India has been promoting its self interest in Ghana because Ghanaians are the most accommodating people on this planet earth . Kofi Anann center, Flag Staff ( Jubliee) House, Komenda sugar factory and so on. Where in Africa has India put M. Ghandi's statute at a university?
It would have been more acceptable had India Government established an Institute for the study of non violence as part of the Political science department of UG and put the statutes of Ghandi and Martin Luther King and Nkrumah in front of the Institute's building or lobby. And how about setting up and institute if computation and digital software at KNUST? Or support AHESI U? No !! The only belief or behavior that is redeemable of M. Ghandi's life is the use of non violence to effect political and or social change.
As Nkrumah once agitated during our independence struggle: " they are here for your goods, not your Good"! India needs Consumption obsessed Ghanaian elite to dump the goods from their industries. The best start is to influence the minds of our future elite of the supremacy of Indians. Far fetched? Well the caste system, a form of racsism is still alive and well in India.
If we believe in human dignity then the Ghandi statute must be moved to the front of the India Embassy in Accra. Not at the University of Ghana.
In its place we should rather erect the statutes of Yaa Asantewa, Nkrumah, Mensah Sarba, Ephrium Amu and others. So what is the value of M. Ghandi's statue in campus life of the University of Ghana community? That is the question the authorities must answer. Symbols matter!!!

What they are doing today as result of the South-South agreement which our leaders went to in the past. We can also talk about the non-alighned movement which Kwame Nkrumah and Nehru of India among others fought to establish. Just as Kwame Nkrumah is revered in Ghana and Africa, so is Gandhi in the Indian sub-continent which includes Pakistan and Bangladesh, the former East Pakistan. There's no gain-saying the fact that Gandhi stood for Non-violence and having the statue on Legon Campus will mean an end to Aluta by both Lectures and Students. The word "Aluta" came from Legon, being a word carved out of "Aluta Continua',Portuguese meaning the struggle continues.It was phrase used by the late Mozambican President Samora Machel during the Liberation war against the Portuguese in the Seventies.The Legon Students used it against the Acheampong regime. So statue, no more " Aluta!,"
