Try this in future. Anytime you come across such caustic responses to an otherwise innocent issue of interest, just close your eyes and imagine the internalization process of the writer i.e. from early childhood when his/her "blank slate of life" was being filled by the omissions and or commissions of those who are supposed to shape his life, viewed against his adult posture and you will not even bother to dignify his/her comment with the contempt it deserves. A psychologist will tell you that a mis/behavior is a reflection of early (childhood) upbringing and environment.
A while back, just because I expressed a different view from the "moral majority" concerning President Mahama's input into the so-called Brazil brouhaha, some one writing under the moniker, Ghanaba was able to determine that my MORONIC STUPIDITY WAS THE DIRECT RESULT OF MY TROKOSHIE ANCENTRY. Why this diatribe was a mystery or are some precluded from participating in the dialogue called GHANA though I could deduce a tribal and political undertone to the comment but was it worth dignifying such crass deviancy when he/she was in his/her element getting his dosage of hatred to meet his/her daily cravings?
By the way, I was at Anlogah E P Middle School in 1964 with one lad, Kwawukumey - I have forgotten his first name but I think it should be Christian - was my classmate. The Head master then was one Oliver Quist and my dad was Victor Quist, the Inspector of Police in charge of the district. Could you by any chance be the same person.
I have resorted to this mode having failed to get to you through your email address.

As you indicate, there is much going on psychologically with a person who resorts to abusive language against a stranger who is just sharing his perspective on an issue. It is a pity this tribalist allows so much hate to dwell in him when God fills him with abundant love. How did he get to this point?

Your Ewe should have been with a Gonja accent.
Unfortunately, this is how most southerners see northern Ghana; an Hausa spoken people.
Hausa's are not Ghanaians and Hausa is not one of the languages spoken in northern Ghana.
The Hausas hail from northern Nigeria.
Let it be known by all Ghanaians.

Secondly, I know that Gonja is spoken in Damango. But it wasn't Gonja that we picked; it was Hausa, which was the common language within the Settlement Scheme our Dad and his British partner were liquidating.
Thirdly, it is indeed true that most Southerners difficulty distinguishing Hausas from other Northerners.
Fourthly, and more gravely, I take exception to your claim that Hausas are not Ghanaians. It is another ignorant position of some uninformed Ghanaians, who say same of Ewes. Hausas have been settling within the territory of Ghana for about 500 years, possibly more, and are closely linked with the cola trade. How can you say that the descendants of those Hausas are not Ghanaians, a post-colonial creation that only came into in 1957?

HISTORY OF HAUSA IN GHANA
Ghana is a tropical country that lies along the coast of West Africa. It has a population of more than 20 million. The Hausa are the largest ethnic group in West Africa, and a majority of them are Muslims. The Hausa are originally from an area known as "Hausaland," a region covering 75,000 square miles and straddling the borders of Niger and Nigeria. They first began to settle in Ghana about 500 years ago.
In the fifteenth century, the first Muslim traders from Hausaland arrived and settled in the northeastern section of Ghana. With the expansion of trade in the eighteenth century and the "holy wars" of Fulani in the nineteenth century, Hausa immigration to Ghana increased. Hausa traders, Muslim priests, and Hausa-speaking slaves helped to spread the Hausa culture in Ghana.
The language of Hausa has more native speakers than any other language in sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated 22 million native speakers,
plus additional 17 million second language speakers. The main Hausa speaking area is northern Nigeria and Niger, but Hausa is also widely spoken in northern Ghana and northern Cameroon, and there are large Hausa communities in every major West African city. Most Hausa speakers are Muslims, and Hausa is often a lingua franca among Muslims in non-Hausa areas. There is a large and growing printed literature in Hausa, which includes novels, poetry, plays, instruction in Islamic practice, books on development issues, newspapers, news magazines, and even technical academic works. Radio and television broadcasting in Hausa is ubiquitous in northern Nigeria and Niger, and radio stations in Ghana and Cameroon have regular Hausa broadcasts, as do international broadcasters such as the BBC, VOA,Deutsche Welle, Radio Moscow, Radio Beijing, and others. Hausa is used as the language of instruction at the elementary level in schools in northern Nigeria, and Hausa is available as course of study in northern Nigerian universities.
Besides, several high degrees (masters and PhD) are offered in Hausa in various universities in the UK, US and Germany. Hausa is also being used in various social media networks around the world. In terms of sheer numbers, Hausa thus ranks as one of the world's major languages, and it has widespread use in a number of countries of West Africa. Hausa's rich poetic, prose, and musical literature, more and more of which is now available in print and in audio and video recordings, makes it a rewarding area of study for those who reach an advanced level.
Aside from the inherent interest of Hausa language and its literature, the study of Hausa provides perhaps the most informative entry into the world of Islamic West Africa. Throughout West Africa, there is a strong connection between Hausa and Islam. The influence of the Hausa language on the languages of many non-Hausa Muslim peoples in West African is readily apparent. Likewise, many Hausa cultural practices, including such overt features as dress and food, are shared by other Muslim communities. Because of the dominant position which Hausa language and culture have long held, the study of Hausa provides crucial background for other areas such as West African history, politics (particularly in Nigeria and Niger), gender studies, commerce, and the arts.
What are their lives like?
Since the fifteenth century, Hausa traders imported textile products, leather goods, metal locks, and horse equipment to the area of present-day Ghana. Until the beginning of this century, slaves, kola nuts, coffee, gold, and elephant tusks were the products that the Hausa traded in exchange. With the expansion of trade, Hausa immigration into Ghana increased. Very few of the Hausa immigrants came to Ghana with wives. Instead, as soon as they began to make a living in any area, they would take local wives and start to build families. However, they would invite Hausa priests to settle near them so that their children would be educated in the Koran. This was done in order to reduce the influence of the children's non-Hausa mothers, and to keep the Hausa culture alive.
Hausa women are given less educational opportunities than men and are required to marry while still very young. They are often confined to the home, except for visits to relatives, ceremonies, and the workplace. They are primarily responsible for tending to the children and doing the household chores. This includes providing the water and fuel needed for cooking. In addition, they are expected to invest the rest of their time in some type of trade. The money earned is used in financing their daughters' dowries.
The Hausa are very industrious people and idleness is not tolerated among them. In fact, they have been known to hold down several occupations at the same time, such as positions in the military, trade and commerce, social services, and the spreading of Islam. In this respect, they have come to dominate the country in the areas of religion and commerce.
The national dress of the Hausa consists of loose flowing gowns and trousers. The gowns have wide openings on both sides for ventilation. The trousers are loose at the top and center, but rather tight around the legs. Leather sandals and turbans are also typical. Today, these gowns and sandals are still worn by the wealthy of northern Ghana; however, more people have begun wearing European style clothing and other tailored garments.
What are their beliefs?
The Hausa of Ghana are virtually all Muslim. This is a high percentage in a country where a small percentage of the population is Islamic. Both the Qadiriyah brotherhood and the Tijaniyah order have followers there. Nevertheless, the religious practices of the Hausa have been mixed with local traditions. For example, they believe in a variety of spirits, both good and bad. Traditional rituals include making sacrificial offerings to the spirits and to the spirit possessed. Most rituals are performed by family members, but specialists are called upon to cure diseases. The Hausa priests, or malams, are thought to have the best charms. According to the malams, different magical formulas have different effects. The priests claim to have cures for every aspect of human concern.

Hi Solo,
Thanks for your post.
I've heard your piece of advice many times. In fact, we grew up on it, if you're an Ewe who grew up among the Gas and Akans. It has led to what I call the "si kpi kporwo" mentality, i.e., leave them alone or don't mind them mentality - practically all Ewes have towards the expression of prejudice and insults they receive from others. In fact, threats to kill Ewes don't even elicit a response from most Ewes. I've grown beyond that, as no group of people should be expected to suffer such vilification from anyone else in a civilised society.
In these parts, white racists don't dare say against Blacks openly on social media the kind of things we read on Ghanaweb or said in Ghana against Ewes and people from the North. So once I am through with a couple of things, you shall be reading how to tackle the yobos.
I didn't attend EP but two junior siblings did around that time. Quite a lot of Kwawukumes went to EP. I went to Avete. I know Oliver Quist quite well. Don't recollect the Inspector your Dad though. In any case, the Quists are family. My maternal grandma brought up the late uncle Godwin Quist as her son when his own mother, her sister, died very early.

I am always happy when i hear from some of my homeland people Ewe. And I am not looking down upon myself and my tribe but we need to learn and stop this unnecessary tribalistic behavior. We are associated with evil and hatred. We hate the Akans especially the Asante for no apparent reasons. When you are in a trotro or vip and you speak ewe everybody will look at you differently. I bear a fully Ashanti name and a voltarian rejected my signature just to withdraw money from my own account cos the teller saying Ashanti are too know and my signature is too bossy. But when i started to speak impeccable ewe she was amazed. Whether we like it or not Twi is a commercial language in Ghana so we should rather learn from them how it became possible cos Ewe is the second largest ethnic group in Ghana.

Hello Kodjo,
personally I think much could be done at a communal level, but if things are so much array in Ghana and Eweland now that people cannot organise community activities that help de-stigmatise Ewe, then I am not sure due to my lack of experience living in Ghana. All I can say from my experience is, do not give up cause they are a kid(children are stubborn), just keep speaking Ewe. If they think it funny or weird, keep going and add humour to it, associate it with good not with 'daddy getting frustrated 'cause my Ewe is poor'. It takes dedication on your side too, you cannot just forget and be "ah well", takes perseverance. My sister adds Ewe and her other languages to her CV and past the name based discrimination (she has already non-officially changed her name on her CVs), Ewe gives a big edge, people don't know what it is and get even more interested.
As for Ewe's born or moved abroad, my next stage is to try and create a crowd source-style Ewe learning website. As it takes a lot of time and skills (web design, coding etc), it is not something that would happen instantly.
If a volunteering spirit can be found among Ewe's to help create such a website for people, it can create a positive impact. For children websites won't be very fun but if you go on youtube for example, you will find hundreds of videos created by volunteers to help children learn a specific language. If I spoke Ewe, I would probably do it myself. It is as simple as that. Find someone decent at animating, get someone with a welcoming voice to tell a popular story told in Ewe. My father always told me the stories such as (excuse my spelling) Matalaywa and the Witch, the story of the wolf and the mother's singing voice, and so forth. If more stories told in Ewe with subtitles are on youtube, there is already exposure, interest and resource.
Another free resource I can direct you to is a website called TalkToMeInKorean, they started off very small, in fact I remember how small they were when I had not even started university yet, now they co-own a cafe completely dedicated to their language learning website and travel abroad with thousands of followers. I will not be sly and pretend the k-pop trend does not see it prosper but the structure they follow, video, podcasts, pdf material etc is a very effective mode of more loose learning.

A mistake by whom, you or your criminal Francis Tawiah? It is your turn to prove to readers why FRANCIS TAWIAH is not FRANCIS KWARTENG!
Do you think I care whether you read Francis Tawiah before responding to Francis Kwarteng? Explain.
Who is Francis Tawaih? Explain.
Do you have to read Francis Tawiah in order to respond to Francis Kwarteng? Explain.
What did Francis Tawiah say that has anything to do with Francis Kwarteng? Explain.
You are caught with your pants down! How d you explain the conflation since Francis Kwarteng is not Francis Tawiah? Explain.
Could it be that your Francis Tawiah is also Francis Kwarteng? Explain.
In your shemful attempt to make up grotesque stories, you see what your criminal midset has got you into?
Have you contaced the FBI, the CIA, and the Ghanaian consulate about Francis Tawiah? Explain.
Have you got the URL for readers who may be interested in reading more about your imagined criminal, Francis Tawiah? Explain.

It is my "Thansgiving" gift to you (alwasy remember my Ghanaweb articles are not for you. i don't write for your kind).
There is no indirect or direct connection here. If you follow my advice to read criticically, then, Adjoa Wangara, you will understand cetain basic things.
Indeed, if you had read the comments you attribute to me critically (or closely, you would have certainly realized that it is only you in the entire commentary wearing the "Kookoase" title. I will forgive you for the oversight.
"Kookoase scholar" is not plural. It is a singular referent! Again "Kookoase scholar" does not indirectly refer to every known Kookoase person you know on this planet. This is called critical reading!
Finally, "a villager" is not plural. It is a singular referent as well, so it is with "What is a villager?" What is plural about these? Do you read commentaries carefully before responding to them?
Could you be blind? Could you be having problems with your Braille? Why is "singular" plural in your Kookoase head? Geez, this man is killing me! I can't take it anymore!
Unlike you, no one is dumb in my family as far as I can tell. No one in my family knows I am FRANCIS TAWIAH. Unlike you, no one in my family knows I have ever set my foot in the American South. That is the difference.
Further, this conversation I had with my niece and nephew was only about you and your ingrained ignorance. In making these serious jokes about you and your childish ignorance on Ghanaweb I never mentioned the Asantehene, Okyehene, PV Obeng, Francis Kwarteng, Garby Otchere-Darko, John Kufuor, etc. I MENTIONED ONLY YOU. I never mentioned any of your Kookoase family memebrs!
Besides, of all the Kookoase people I personally know on this planet, it was only you, once again, I singled out for our serious jokes about your childish ignorance on Ghanaweb!
The statement you attribute to me here says it all. Go back to the stateement again and tell readers which other Kookoase person I mentioned beside you (in the quote)? In other words, did you read anywhere in all the comments I specifically made to you where I mentioned any other Kookoase person beside you?
You know why you always get yourself in trouble? You don't read critically let alone understand what you write. The other time you listed a few words from one of my essays and which you claimed did not exist (or whatever) only for another reader to put you in your place.
In fact you could not even tell the difference between "rigor" and "rigour" and you want me to say you are the "smartest Kookoase scholar on Ghanaweb"? Hell no.
You are the dumbest Kookoase acholar on Ghanaweb! Get your facts right before opening your stinking mouth to talk! Hahahahahhaa...I am having fun again with you!
Again, learn to read critically before commenting on what you read. I have consitently asked you to read critically but you don't. Once again I mentioned only you as a Kookoase scholar.
I wrote:

Where does this statement say your father, mother, and entire family are included in my jocular indictment of your childish rants on Ghanaweb?
I singled only you out. Please don't go down with your Kookoase family or any other Kookoase for that matter. I am Kookoase myself and yet did not include myself in my indictment of your childish rants on Ghanaweb.

It is a statement I will never retract! You deserve it more than anyone on Ghanaweb.

My own mother doesn't even speak Ewe to us Andy. The problem is not about Akans not learning any language apart from Twi cos it is the commercial language in Ghana and many are comfortable with that. Ewes in Accra speak more Ga than our homeland language and why? Simple. We are perceived to be very evil . Whether we are evil or not we have also attested to this true direct and indirect ways. I organized a jogging for where i was working in Tema but it will surprise you two of my own people from Kpando said they will not take part because we wanna people can even send a strange car to hit u. How do you want people therefore to align themselves with you with these perception. We need a thorough self assessment which goes beyond a mere sentimental statements.

Ah well!!! What can I say. My children are in an even worse situation.
I am an Ewe from Anloga (Kportorgbe) and married to a Fanti from Cape Coast. We have lived outside Ghana since 1976. My Ewe has lost the linguistic bite and my Fanti has become corrupted into what the "Cape Coasters" call "Fanglish".
I have tried to find Ewe primers for my wife and my children for many years. I could not help feel pity for myself watching my children teased into tears at Anloga anytime we visited - and they love the clean golden sand.
Now my daughter is learning Fanti in London and my sons are just drifting on Ausieland - throwing around words in both Ewe and Fanti that do not make any sense.
Watching them in their torment, I have propounded a theory that we all carry a gene that makes the mother tongue refuse to disappear and that someday they will learn both Ewe and Fanti as nature abhors vacuum. At least that assuages my guilt.

Wow, Zigi, I have to admit that I like your theory! Not only the theory itself do I find interesting, but also both the guilt-filled circumstances that have necessitated propounding it and the usefulness of it! Wow!
However, it seems to be more of a rationalisation than a theory! Not surprisingly, its usefulness is to assuage your guilt -- and, conveniently, let the belief that 'nature abhors vacuum' take care of the job in future! It's this usefulness of it, as a consolation, that I find most attractive about your "theory"! (Any "theory" that provides so much consolation must be a gift from the gods!!! Walahi!!!)
And it is at this point that I come in: I too need to assuage my pain-cum-guilt since my circumstances are not too different from yours! Thus,
I think I need to appropriate this "theory" of yours for my own use. Not only is the pain-and-guilt growing heavily as the children are growing: it is also weighing me down disturbingly! I need to off-load it to the gods of nature!
Thanks, Zigi, for not keeping this wonderful theory to yourself but sharing it here!

The insensitive teasing is the major hindrance on kids learning new languages, besides their own. It stopped my immediate snr. brother and I from learning Ga and Twi properly once we picked English even though both of us were born in Accra.
Perhaps, the fact that the playground language in Accra was English contributed a lot too - not only the shuttling b/n Accra and Anloga - something our mum couldn't fathom out. Grown-ups don't kids hate it when teased in such a manner. There must be a public a sensitivation policy directed at grown-ups on this matter. People shld be thought to encourage kids rather than taunt them and make fun of them, no matter how funny or ridiculous what they say is.

Andy-K,
This is not an issue with Ewes only. It is a common thing among all the tribes in Ghana and Africa in general. The Hispanics and Chinese do very well in teaching the children their language. I tried teaching my children the Twi language. They responded to it initially. However, when my eldest reached the age of 9 or 10, (3rd to 4th grade) he started responding to my conversations with him in English and I lost it from there because I took the easier route as a student and a full time worker at the time so he also lost the few vocabulary he learnt. At 24 and a college graduate, he is trying to pick it up from where he left it after a couple of trips to Ghana. I encourage people to try their best and teach their children at least their native Ghanaian language.

I am half Ewe and even though we did not grow up in Ghana, my mother did a tremendous job teaching us Ewe. We are all fluent in Ewe. I am not good at reading or writing it, but I am planning on finding a place to brush up on it.
I find that many Ewes, however, are ashamed of their language and would rather speak Akan or Ga. I find this very embarrassing as I am happy when I meet someone who speaks Ewe. There are some Ewes who do not even speak their language.
Unfortunately, I do not know of any reputable school or individuals who could help your daughter.
Good luck.
