Transport fares likely to go up again

Transport fares are likely to up again due to the upward adjustments in fuel prices over the weekend.

On Saturday March 1, 2014 the National Petroleum Authority announced an average of 6 percent increase for petrol, diesel and kerosene at the pump stations. Petrol now sells at 255.00 pesewas per litre. Kerosene has also gone up by 6.12 percent and diesel 6.00 percent.

The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) met on Monday, March 3 to consider increasing transport fares.

Greater Accra regional Chairman of the GPRTU, Mr. Robert Sabah, in an interview with Citi Fm said Ghanaians must expect a likely increase in transport fares.

"Whenever there should be an increase we should be notified so that if there should be any increase in transport fares, it will run simultaneously with the fuel prices increment.”

“We are not seeing this and this is one of our drawbacks in terms of maintaining peace between our drivers and passengers,” Mr. Sabah said.

In January 2014, the Ministry of Transport approved a 20 percent increase in transport fares after the cumulative increments by the national petroleum authority.
