It is becoming palpably clear and an established fact, one day after another through comments by some leading members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that, His Excellency Professor John Evans Atta Mills and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) government are the only messiahs to save the nation, Ghana, from its economic doldrums.

Entering at the time Ghana’s economy was plunged into hysteria by the erstwhile Kufuor administration, with the total Gloss Domestic Product (GDP) was absolutely nothing to write home about, President Mills and his government have, in a matter of just three years, piloted affairs of nation so meticulously, and prudently succeeded in reviving and putting the comatose economy back on a very sound footing for the take-off and accelerated growth that Ghanaians have always wished to see.

This and many another successes chalked by the present NDC government, is what has placed President Mills and Ghana on a higher pedestal, earning the president some prestigious awards, including the South-South News, citing as a result of the progress being made in the country’s economy, as well as improvement in the education front.

Satisfied with the performance of the President Mills-led NDC administration, Mr. Andrew Awuni, a former spokesperson of ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, had to confess that indeed Jesus Christ is Lord!

Mincing no words, Mr. Andrew Awuni, in an interview with Citi FM, an Accra-based radio station commended President Atta Mills and his government, for putting the economy of Ghana on a sound footing.

Speaking on the Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, 23rd November 2011, Mr. Awuni, in very plain words confesses that the NDC government has, indeed, stabilised the country’s economy.

In order not to incur the wrath of his party members, as result of his praises being heaped on President Mills and his team, Mr. Andrew Awuni, in his comments decided to keep the balance, hence credited his party for the ‘good foundation laid’.
Being little politically mischievous in order to escape criticism from his fellow party members, Awuni said it would not have been possible if the NDC had not inherited a ‘well managed economy from the erstwhile Kufuor administration’ in which he served
“I think they have done well, but I have a little problem, because the very things they did not believe in, this evening I heard Haruna [Iddrisu] talking about inflation, Haruna didn’t believe in inflation, they told me inflation doesn’t matter, today they want us to agree with them,” he recalled.

“But I will agree with them…they have managed the economy very well, even though they had difficulties with the currency.

“They took over when the dollar was matching shoulder to shoulder with our cedi in 2009, they ran it down to about GhC1. 50 now GhC1. 60, so we are talking about stability,” Awuni noted.
Whether they laid down the foundation for the NDC government to build on, the fact of the matter is that the present administration has indeed stabilised the economy with significant growth in real GDP from 4.0 percent in 2009, to 7.7 percent in 2010 and 13.6 percent in 2011, making Ghana one of the fastest growing economies in the world, which is unprecedented in the history of this country.

Touching on Mr. Koku Anyidoho’s comment, Andrew Awuni siding with his party, took a swipe at the Castle’s Communications Director, saying his comments must not be taken for granted.
Unfortunately on his part, Mr. Awuni failed to address the root cause of Koku Anyidoho’s statement, when his party’s flagbearer, Williams Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, their National Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and former Chairman Mac Manu, triggered the sentiments with their “all die be die” and warmongering comments.
Mr. Andrew Awuni has, therefore, joined the league of NPP faithful like Mr. Kwame Pianim, who have vowed to vouch for President Mills’ creditability.
It would be recalled that NPP MPs in Parliament on Wednesday 16th November 2011, signifying their endorsement of the 2012 budget statement unwrapped by Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, particularly, on the implementation of a number of pro-poor intervention programmes to be embarked on by the Mills administration next year, to the surprise of Ghanaians, in unison shouted “Away” to bid farewell to their party flagbearer, whose vision has been short-landed by the 2012 budget statement.
