I believe just as you're envious of a thriving Nigerian community in Ghana, you're also envious of Ashantis who are superior to you. We Nigerians have excelled in academia, sports, business and music and you can't compare Ghana to us in these areas. I respect Ghana, since I grew up there and I see it as home, but we must always tell the truth.

The Asantehene Nana Kofi Karikari triggered the war out of anger concerning the British ownership of the Elmina Castle in 1872.
Nana Kofi Karikari sent a delegation to Holland and England to try and stop the exchange of properties between Queen Victoria and King Willem 3rd but couldn't succeed.He had no other option than to attack the Elmina Castle with the help of Elmina Chief Nana Kobina Gyan in 1873.
The Sagrenti War started in December 1873 by January 1874 the British Army have arrived in Kumasi.
Asantehene Nana Kofi Karikari was not found in his palace.He didn't want to be arrested so after 24 hours the British collected all the valuable items and burnt down the palace.
You cannot say that the British stole Asante artefacts because that's what happen when you lose a military battle.They ransack and destroy whatever they want unless there's peaceful capitulation.
I sincerely wish that whatever belongs to the Asantes returns to them but we must choose our words carefully.Tnx.

He was a conqueror and right or wrong conquerors do as they please,sometimes called spoils of war. Our inability to accept that we were a conquered people and the British, like all conquerors from the year dot, did as they please. The Asantes, when they had a kingdom, did the same, they attack and conquer small weaker people and take their treasures including able bodied men and women who are sold to the whitemen for obsolete guns. The Treaty of Fomena stripped the Asantes of control over neighbouring territories and Kofi Karikari, the Asante King who escaped was later destooled. The Asantes were required to pay 50,000 ounces of gold as reparations. There is currently no Asante kingdom because they ceased to have a kingdom in September, 1874. There is no King of Asante because Kumasi is not an independent sovereign state. Unfortunately we love the idea of royality so we call the Chief of Kumasi, Asantehene, King of the Asante Kingdom etc. all a load of bull shit.

These artifacts were taken as spoils of war when the so called ashanti empire was battered and humiliated by the British and a brave coalition of smaller states who needed to destroy a slave raiding, despotic and backward empire
