Woman dumps baby in well to avenge boyfriend’s assault

A forty-year-old woman, Serwaa Akoto, has dumped her two-year-old child in a well at Asokore in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern region as revenge for alleged assault on her by her boyfriend.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Koforidua Government Hospital.

Information gathered by the Daily Heritage indicates that, the woman is alleged to have committed the crime on the midnight of Monday.

In an interview with the mother of the suspect, one Beatrice, she said the daughter has had a mental problem for a while and was treated at Ankaful mental Hospital in Accra.

She said the daughter who has five children recently returned from Kumasi with the deceased after visiting her boyfriend.

According to her, the daughter returned with marks of assault on the face and wrist and alleged that the boyfriend assaulted her when she visited him in Kumasi and kept threatening that he will revenge.

The mother said on Monday night, the suspect rushed to her room to announce that she has dumped the child into the well.

The mother said she quickly called for help from residents of the area who tried to rescue the child from the well, but was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Koforidua Government Hospital.

Attempts made to speak to the boyfriend of the suspect proved futile.

The family is yet to report the matter to the police.

The deputy Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sargent Gideon Boateng, told the paper the police will soon commence investigations and will arrest the suspect to assist in investigations.
