Woman arrested with six voter ID cards

AKIM ODA, The Eastern Regional Police have arrested a 31-year-old woman at Akim Oda (about 60 miles from the capital Accra) for allegedly possessing six thumbprinted voter identity cards.

Esi Sarfoa was arrested when she allegedly gave one of the ID cards, bearing the name, Faustina Mensah, to a 17-year-old girl (name withheld) to exchange it for a photo ID card.

Esi has been granted police enquiry bail while investigations continue.

A source close to the Regional Police Commander, which made this known to the Graphic, said on September 21, while registered voters in the area were having their photographs taken at the Methodist Junior Secondary School at Sorodae, a suburb of suburb of Akim Oda, for the issuing of photo ID cards, Esi was seen with a quantity of laminated and non-laminated ID cards.

The source said the laminated ones bore the names of Beatrice Ofosua, Gladys Laankas Lamptey, Mercy Boateng and Felicity Owusu, while the non-laminated ones bore the names of Faustina Baafi and Paulina Owusu.

According to the source, in the course of the exercise, Esi, who was carrying a polythene bag containing the ID cards, allegedly called the 17-year-old girl who happened to be at the premises, gave her one of the ID cards bearing the name Faustina Mensah and told her to present it to the electoral officers and have her photograph taken.

It said the girl who became afraid, informed her elder sister about what had happened. The sister raised the alarm and Esi was arrested.

Later, according to the source, the Birim South District Electoral Officer, Mr. Kwaku Owusu Addo, on hearing of the incident, sent his supervisor, Mr. A. Ahiamadia, to bring Esi for questioning but she managed to escape under the pretext that she was going to collect the polythene bag, which she had left with someone.

The source said Esi later reported herself to the police with the six ID cards and she was arrested but granted police enquiry bail.
