We can’t be responsible for murders at your home – Ashanti Regional Minister

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has said the work of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) which he heads, does not include the security of individuals in their homes.

As such, he said he is unable to speak to murders that occur in people’s homes in the region.

Reacting to some security issues in the region following the recent murder of a nurse, Ruth Ama Eshun, by some unknown persons on Monday, February 3, the minister said the police had taken up the matter, made a few arrest and the case being investigated.

The murder of Ruth according to media reports, brings to seven, the total number of women murdered in the Ashanti Region within the last year but the minister says he can only speak to three because the others resulted from family problems.

“What I can respond to is where maybe somebody has been murdered not through family fight or something but the other ones, first two, a husband and a wife are having a problem and maybe the husband kills the wife, those ones once it gets to the law court, the court will deal with it”, he told Accra-based Citi FM.

He said the one “involving the nurse” is being investigated and some arrests have so far been made .

Mr. Mensah explained that his council is involved with the general security of the public in his area and that he said does not include security in people’s homes.

“The only thing we do is to educate the general public and that is what we do but we cannot move from family to family, household to household. In which part of the world did this become part of a regional security council’s responsibility”, he quizzed.

He maintains security measures have been put in place to tackle the increasing number of what he prefers to call “public murders and not every murder”, but will however not disclose the details to the public.
