'We are still investigating suspension of 25 Agona Swedru SHS students' – GES PRO

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has stated that it has launched an investigation into the indefinite suspension of 25 students from Agona Swedru Senior High School (SHS), following a violent clash over an alleged same-sex relationship proposal on campus.

Speaking to the matter on Peace FM on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, confirmed the incident, stating that the affected students have since been sent home.

“It happened yesterday and we quickly went there to obtain some initial briefing on the situation to engage the public. We are still investigating it but the initial reports suggest that about 25 students are involved in the unfortunate situation,” he said.

According to him, information gathered after a visit to the school indicates that some of the affected persons are final-year students sitting for the 2025 WASSCE.

Fenyi indicated that, despite their suspension, arrangements have been made for the students to sit for their exams, adding that they will be coming from home to the school to write them.

“Out of the 25, some of them are also SHS 3 (final year) students who will be sitting for the WASSCE. They have been suspended and withdrawn from campus. They will be coming from the house to write the exams. That is the initial arrangement that has been made. I’m sure that going forward, we will monitor the situation, engage with authorities and finalise the decision,” he indicated.

“The students have been suspended and we are probing it. We understand how nuanced this issue can be. We have engaged and monitored to make sure that these students will still have access to the WASSCE which is basically a right for them. In order not for them to spread the situation to their colleagues or influence them, they have been suspended and will be coming to the campus to write their exam,” he added.

Initial reports on GhanaWeb on August 4, 2025, indicated that school authorities said the altercation began when one male student allegedly proposed a romantic relationship to another male student, who declined the offer.

The student who rejected the proposal is said to have informed his colleagues, who reportedly encouraged him to accept the proposal as part of a plan to entrap the other student.

On the agreed day of the meeting, a group of students believed to be friends of the student who was approached allegedly ambushed and physically assaulted the student who made the proposal.

In retaliation, the assaulted student reportedly informed his dormitory mates, leading to a reprisal attack that escalated into a fight involving several students.

The school’s administration intervened and conducted a disciplinary hearing before deciding to suspend the students involved.

The Headmistress of the school, Golda Esi Andam, confirmed the suspension and emphasised that due process was followed.

“These students will write their final exams under the escort of their parents. They have now realised that the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not joke with its code of conduct,” she stated.
