Waris finds net in Ligue 1 relegation playoff

Ghana’s Abdul Majeed Waris scored for Lorient in their 2-1 loss away to Troyes in the French League relegation playoff on Thursday.

Lorient finished 18th on the French League table and they were thrown into the playoff with Troyes who were 3rd in Ligue 2.

Lorient conceded first through Stephane Darbion in the 37th minute but Waris responded in the 82nd minute with a well-taken shot after he was put through by Benjamin Moukandjo.

But Waris’ team could not hold on for the win as 40-year-old Benjamin Nivet rolled back the years to fire past Benjamin Lecomte give Troyes the win on the night.

The second leg will be played at Lorient on Sunday with a place in the Ligue 1 at stake for the winner.

The losers will drop into Ligue 2 for next season. Waris’ goal was his 9th of the season for the club and he made 35 appearances in all (31 as a starter, 4 as a substitute).
