Toronto's Atuahene Commits to Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Antwi Atuahene, a 6-4, 185-pound lead guard from Toronto, Canada has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Rutgers University for head coach Gary Waters, it was announced today. Atuahene will be a freshman at Rutgers in 2003-04.

Atuahene, regarded as one of the top players in Canada, starred at Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School in Toronto last season, where he averaged 34.5 points, 11.5 assists and 10.0 rebounds. He scored 48 points in a single game, and dished out 22 assists in another game. He led Henry Carr to a 44-4 record and an appearance in The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAAA (largest school) finals.

Over the course of his prolific scholastic career, Atuahene scored more than 6,000 points and dished out more than 1,800 assists. Atuahene, who averaged 36.5 ppg. as a junior, including a career high of 56 points in one game, was a standout at the 2002 Nike All-American Camp in Indianapolis

“Antwi is the ultimate lead guard,” said Waters. “He’s a leader and a winner. While he is a young man who can obviously score, he is also a terrific passer and ball-handler, and has the potential to be a standout defender in our system. Antwi is strong and athletic. I really like his makeup and competitive nature.”

Atuahene is the third player to sign a national letter of intent with Rutgers and will join 6-3 guard Quincy Douby (St. Thomas More Prep/Brooklyn, NY) and 6-4 guard Marquis Webb (Paterson Catholic HS/Paterson, NJ) as members of the 2003-04 recruiting class.
