Ghana has long been a signatory to numerous international protocols and treaties that uphold human rights of citizens.
Yet, within its own borders, one issue that has consistently evaded legal attention is the existence of witches’ camps and their related abuses.
Although Parliament is still considering an Anti-Witchcraft Bill introduced as a private member’s bill, several organisations continue to advocate for its swift passage.
Calls by Civil Society Organisations are aimed at restoring dignity to particularly, women in such communities in northern Ghana, who are often accused of practicing witchcraft.
Such accusations often led to widespread abuse and sometimes killings.
In light of this, GhanaWeb’s Etsey Atisu sits down with Genevive Partington, Country Director of Amnesty International, on The Lowdown to explore whether the bill stands a chance of becoming law.
Watch the full interview as they unpack the complexities surrounding the criminalisation of witches’ camps and their broader human rights implications.
