Suit against EC on voters roll dead on arrival - Amaliba

A member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba has predicted that case against the Electoral Commission (EC) over the voters register will not succeed.

A former National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako have sued the EC at the Supreme Court over the voters register.

The plaintiffs are invoking the original jurisdiction of the court to declare the 2012 voters register as null and void.

Abu Ramadan and Nimako want an order setting aside the 2012 Voters Register and also compelling the EC to compile a fresh voters register before any new public election is conducted in the country.

According to the plaintiffs, the current register contains names of unqualified persons which is inconsistent with the Constitution.

But Mr. Amaliba who believes issues surrounding the voters register have been given the needed attention by the EC, said the petitioners are only wasting their time since he knows ‘nothing good will come out from the case’.

“Abu Ramadan and his other friend are only wasting their time and the judge’s. Judges in our country are very much aware of what is happening as far as voters register is concerned and I must tell you, they are taking judicial attention on all that and, therefore, will not allow anyone to interfere” he stated on an Accra based radio station Wednesday.
