Stop giving ‘thank you monies’ to judicial service workers - Chief Justice

Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo wants the payment of ‘thank you monies’ given to judicial service workers after their service term to be halted.

According to the Chief Justice, these acts are unacceptable.

“The practice where some judges’ feel obliged to pay ‘thank you monies’ to judicial service staff must stop immediately because the more we do, the more people will expect it continues,” she said.

Speaking at the 39th Annual General meeting of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana in Accra, she said the people are mandated to discharge those duties.

“It was their job and they were paid salaries, allowances and other benefits for their service to the judiciary. So whether it was a gift, money or appreciation we must stop,” she urged.

She charged the workers of the judicial service to take charge of their own health and lives despite the support from the government.

“Apart from it being the duty of the State to take care of the judicial workers, judges must take good care of themselves because a holistic view of wellness is necessary for us to thrive,” she said.
