Special Prosecutor's Office will only investigate ‘serious cases’ - Martin Amidu

Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu

Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, says although his office has responded to every petition that has come to this office, he will only pursue what he calls, “serious cases.”

“There are some people who will just read the news and say ‘this person said this, investigate it’…This office cannot investigate hear-say,” he said.

The Special Prosecutor was speaking at a short ceremony at the Jubilee House on Thursday to swear-in the governing board of the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

At the event, President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged the nine-member board was on to ensure the independence of the office, in line with the law setting up the Special Prosecutor's Office.

“Firstly, your fundamental purpose is to work to ensure the independence of this office,” Akufo-Addo said. The board is expected to help in the formulation of policies and the direction of the affairs of the Martin Amidu-led office.

Mr Amidu asked petitioners to have personal knowledge of the facts of issues they want to see probed.

“I know you cannot have resources to prosecute everybody who commits a crime so you make sure you prosecute only the very serious ones so it can deter people from continuing to commit crime. Because you have to look at the resources you are spending and then the other areas, so we will prosecute serious corruption offenses,” he said.

The Board

The institutions represented on the Board include the Office of the Special Prosecutor itself, the Audit Service, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Commission on Human Rights and Administrative (CHRAJ), among others.

At the swearing in ceremony, President Akufo-Addo explained that the diverse representation of law enforcement agencies on the board is to foster cooperation between the agencies with the office of the Special Prosecutor.
