Sharia is a good law - Sheik Aremeyaw

Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu has said the Sharia Law is a good law that must be embraced and cherished.

He said the law is flexible and moderate and also still being applied in modern democracies in some countries.

Sheikh Aremeyaw, however, noted that the law has been given a negative characterization. This situation, he said, is “unfortunate” and blamed some Islamic scholars for this development.

Sharia is an Islamic religious law that governs not only religious rituals but also aspects of day-to-day life in Islam.

Speaking on the Sunrise morning show on 3FM Monday, May 25, Sheikh Aremeyaw said this law is fearful “because of the public image it has been given and sometimes because of the way it is interpreted”.

He continued: “But I have something that I say that the Sharia is a very good law system. Because it is moderate, it is flexible, and it has third feature of contextualization.”

He further said a lot of attention has been given to the punitive aspect of the law, neglecting the beauty aspect.

“The punitive side of Sharia law constitutes just less than 1 per cent but the whole world we hit at the punitive, which is even applied in modern-day democracies in some countries.”
