Robben is better than Messi, says Van de Kerkhof

The 1978 World Cup runner-up insists the Netherlands star is "head and shoulders" above everyone else, including the four-time Ballon d'Or winner

Former Netherlands midfielder Willy van de Kerkhof believes Arjen Robben is better than Lionel Messi.

The Dutch star scored three goals, and set up one, as his side topped Group B by beating Spain, Chile and Australia.

Van de Kerkhof believes the Bayern Munich star's contribution to his side's campaign shows that he is by far the world's best.

"The first half against Chile was not great, but in the last 20 minutes came the incomparable Arjen Robben," he told Omroep Brabant.

"He is head and shoulders above the rest. He is better than Messi for example."

The 1978 World Cup finalist said he would rather the Netherlands had faced Brazil in the second round than Mexico.

"They should be more relaxed in midfield. We are group winners with nine points. I am proud of the Dutch national team," he said.

"I'd rather play against Brazil. Look, we have beaten Spain and Chile, so you have to say that you belong in amongst the stronger countries.

"But we will soon have to face countries like Argentina, France or Germany. Netherlands, in any case, is in a winning mood, it's a great phase. So let's stick with it."
