Return to ‘cash and carry’ system dangerous, pay NHIS arrears – GMA to govt

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has called on the government and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), to as a matter of urgency, pay all monies owed the various health facilities with immediate effect.

Health facilities would be compelled to revert to cash and carry system by March, 01 in their quest to ensure continuous service delivery as well as to forestall their collapse.

The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana ahead of the State of the Nation Address(SoNA) on Wednesday, February, 20 was upbeat about the payment of arrears to its members.

But the dire situation persists as nothing was heard about the settlement of government’s indebtedness to both private and public health facilities with regards to the NHIS debt.

President of the GMA, Dr. Frank Ankobea, in a statement, noted with great concern the effect of the NHIA’s failure to pay health facilities, both public and private for services rendered from March 2019 to date.

He contended, a re-visit of the cash and carry mode of payment will have dire consequences on the healthcare system and ordinary Ghanaians asking the government to pay off all arrears to prevent such situations.
