No individual has the right to attack health professionals - Mintah Akandoh

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reiterated that no individual has the right to attack health professionals in the country.

Addressing the press on Thursday, August 21, 2025, he emphasised that when members of the public are faced with challenges in accessing prompt healthcare, the proper channel is to lodge a complaint at the facility, rather than resorting to violence.

Ridge Hospital Assault: Akandoh explains handshake with Ralph Williams

"To the whole country, irrespective of the level of provocation at any health facility in this country, nobody, irrespective of your status in society - absolutely nobody, has the right to attack any health professional in this country. No diversionary tactics about handshaking. That is what we must concentrate on to send a clear signal that our health professionals working at the various health facilities are safe," he stated.

He further explained that measures had already been put in place across health facilities to ensure patients and families easily make their grievances known.

“We have communicated to all health facilities in the country, through the Director General (Ghana Health Service), that they must make suggestion boxes available, with the client service numbers on them,” he noted.

'I am a proud farmer' – Health minister responds to critics

The minister’s remarks followed the circulation of a viral video showing relatives of an accident victim clashing with emergency staff of the Ridge Hospital over alleged delays in treatment.

The incident, which escalated into verbal aggression and the physical assault of a nurse, forced hospital management to call in the Ghana Police Service to restore order.

A committee had been established to probe the alleged assault.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the incident, while another is still on the run.
