A former Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs in the erstwhile Kufuor government, Mr. Abraham Ossei-Aidooh, is heaping praise on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over a courtesy call that they made to former President John Agyekum Kufuor on Monday.

He said the gesture was a healthy one that won for his rivals a lot of respect from him.

“It is like the NDC taking a pause and saying; hey you know what, before politics, we are Ghanaians, before all this acrimony for power, we have elders in this country; this is what Ghana is about, we are one big family of relatives.

“It appeared we have forgotten all about that, especially in the few recent years, with the vigilantism and all, and then our brothers make this gesture that is like vitamin C for the good health of ailing mother Ghana,” he said. Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday, the former majority leader said the gesture was a mark of good maturity from the side of the NDC.

On Monday, the leadership of the largest opposition party, the NDC, visited former President Kufuor, the first President that came from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s tradition to check on him.

The former President Kufuor, a man highly respected for his exceptional Statesmanship, has not been too well for some time now due to back pain that sent him into surgery, and it is believed that the NDC went there to wish him well.

But the gesture was a surprise tonic for a country torn by political fault lines.

The entourage, led by the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia was , with the leadership of the Minority in tow.

“I am hoping that once more for the umpteenth time, our supporters who hate one another because of politics will realize that at the top here, there is no feeling of enmity. When we rant and shout at one another in Parliament and on the campaign platform, it is all for the good of the country. So, how can we be on top here shouting about how good the country should be run, and you are also down there scheming about how to destroy one another; who will benefit from all the good intents."

He said the maturity that the NDC showed towards ex-President Kufuor should be an eye-opener for all, that indeed in politics you do not have permanent friends or enemies.

He thanked the Chief Imam Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Shaributu, for showing the way in a similar mature fashion by celebrating his birthday in a church.
