NDC must go to court and annul Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election - Lecturer

A political science lecturer at the Political Science Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwesi Amakye, has advised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to go to court and annul the results for the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

The lecturer told Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that, the shooting incident and intimidation recorded at the La Bawaleshie polling centre is a scar on Ghana’s democracy.

In the view of the lecturer, we are witnessing an ‘all die be die’ form of leadership due to what happened yesterday.

He was disappointed the incident occurred and wondered why masked police officers were assigned to cover the election.

Ghana’s democracy he said has gone far due to how we manage elections in the country but the incident yesterday was unfortunate and irresponsible.

He also opined that the NPP wanted to win the race at all cost hence their decision to use these masked persons to intimidate their opponents.

A shooting incident was recorded during the voting exercise on Thursday.

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, was assaulted by persons alleged to be members of vigilante group, the Invisible Forces who were dressed in police uniform.



Six persons were confirmed by the police to have sustained injuries with one in a critical condition.

The NDC withdrew from the race because they accused government of unleashing terror on members.

Chairman of the party, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo addressing the press on Thursday said, the president should be blamed for the incident.

However, the NPP’s Communications Director, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah says the incident was staged by the opposition to tarnish the image of government and EC.



Madam Alhassan, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, has won the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

The widow of the late MP Mr Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko polled 68.80 per cent of the valid votes cast.

Her closest challenger, Mr Kwasi Delali Brempong of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 30.52 per cent.

Candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Mr William Kofi Dowokpor and Mr Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polled 0.58 and 0.10 per cent respectively.



Out of the 88, 710 registered voters in Tue constituency, only 17, 589 of them voted in the poll in 137 polling stations.

88 votes were rejected by the Electoral Commission.
