Muntaka laments late arrival of ambulance after Kumasi accident

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has expressed his disappointment in the Ghana Ambulance Service’s poor response to emergency cases.

This comes after his vehicle was involved in a road accident in the Ashanti region on Saturday.

The Minority Chief Whip revealed in an interview on JoyNews Desk that the worst could have happened if bystanders had not come to their aid as it took almost an hour for an ambulance to arrive at the scene.

“I could imagine if bystanders had not picked the customs officer who was unconscious on another salon [car] and rushed him to the Konongo hospital and he was going to be lying in that unconscious state for that 50 minutes I don’t know what could have happened,” he said.

He said several calls to the National Ambulance Service went unanswered after which he put a call through to the Executive Director of the service, Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakaria.

“I called, fortunately, he picked, and he promised that in the next 5minutes we’ll see ambulances. It took 15minutes and we called him again… it took close to 50minutes before the first ambulance came,” he narrated.

Muntaka Mubarak and his deputy, Ahmed Ibrahim were travelling from Accra to Kumasi with three other persons when the accident occurred.

“We were coming; all we saw was a salon vehicle making a U-turn on the highway and it was obvious that there was nothing our driver could do than to run into that vehicle. Believe me, the collision was very heavy”.

“Thank God when that happened, we veered into the bush and we kept running because the airbags on our vehicle had [been released], the bonnet had opened and we could not see anything,” he added.

The MPs together with the other occupants of their vehicle were taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The Police have opened an official probe into the near-fatal road accident.
