Michael Essien uncertain about his future

Ghana's former Chelsea player, Michael Essien, is uncertain about his future in lacing his boots for another club after leaving Indonesian side, Persib Bandung, in March.

Essien told the Graphic Sports Online in an interview that he was not negotiating any deal with any club at the moment and was therefore undecided about what the future held for him.

"I am not negotiating a deal with any club at the moment. As you can see I am available and looking forward to see what the future holds for me," he said.

The former Black Stars midfielder's remarks raised concerns as to whether the 35-year-old player would relish going into coaching, especially as his former teammate Laryea Kingston confirmed Essien had acquired the required UEFA License B.

Essien could join ex-teammates, Richard Kingston, Stephen Appiah, Laryea Kingston and John Paintsil, who are all into coaching, should he decide to take up the mantle to pass on his vast experience in the sport to the upcoming generation.

Laryea urged his colleagues to go into coaching when he spoke on the sidelines of the ‘Rexona Be The Next Champion’ project at the Lizzy Sports Complex in Accra on Monday, July 24.

"I do urge most of my colleagues to go into coaching. I felt very happy after Michael Essien told me he has obtained his UEFA B license. I was really delighted to hear that because some of my teammates are 'shy' to be on the touch-line but I believe such steps can help develop our football very well.

"People like myself, Michael Essien, John Paintsil and my brother Richard Kingson will help the game grow because we are going to apply the experience we acquired during our active playing days, so for me I always urge them to venture into coaching," he said.

Essien’s current qualification makes him eligible to manage any club in the Ghana Premier League, but he would have to obtain his Pro License before dreaming of coaching in the English top-tier league.
