The Manhean Sariki, Alhaji Al Hassan Zongo Chief, together with his palace entourage, has paid a courtesy call on the Ngleshie LAAFA Zongo Chief, Sariki Abubakar Sidik, to discuss development issues affecting Zongo communities across the country.
The meeting highlighted three major concerns of the Hausa community, particularly the discriminatory and racist comments they continue to face in Ghana.
According to Sariki Abubakar Sidik, "the Hausa people have faced challenges—especially during national identification processes—where some are wrongly perceived as non-Ghanaians when applying for passports simply because of their tribe."
He stressed that although some members of the Hausa tribe are not Ghanaian, “that does not mean all Hausas are non-Ghanaians.”
The Manhean Zongo Chief urged the Ghana Immigration Service to ensure that foreigners within the Hausa community follow the appropriate procedures to obtain Ghanaian citizenship if they wish to become citizens.
He warned that failure to do so constitutes an offence and could lead to innocent Ghanaian Hausas being unfairly targeted or implicated.
He emphasised the importance of respecting due process and upholding the laws of the land while protecting the rights of genuine Ghanaian citizens.
His call aims to promote clarity and fairness in addressing issues of nationality and citizenship, especially concerning the Hausa community.
The meeting comes on the heels of President John Dramani Mahama’s recent promise to reaffirm the Hausa as Ghanaians—a commitment the community is eagerly awaiting.
The Manhean Zongo Chief also raised concerns about the growing problem of hard drugs in the country, noting that efforts are already underway to curb the menace.
He underscored the need for collective action to tackle the issue, which affects not only Zongo communities but the entire nation.
He assured that Zongo communities are ready to collaborate with authorities to identify and root out individuals engaged in the drug trade and to promote a safer and healthier environment for all.
The Ngleshie LAAFA Zongo Chief, Sariki Abubakar Sidik, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing social challenges.
He called on all stakeholders to join forces to confront the issues facing Zongo communities and the nation at large.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to work together to address pressing concerns—including discrimination, racism and the spread of hard drugs—affecting Zongo communities across Ghana.
