Mahama candidature would be ‘cool chop’ for NPP in 2020 – Hamid

Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid, says election 2020 would be an easy ride for the New Patriotic Party should former President John Mahama stand on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He believes the candidature of Mr Mahama who showed incompetence during his tenure as President would be beaten in any election.

“Mahama will make our work much easier if he contests 2020 [Presidential] elections. After all, we know what he is capable of doing and what he did in his tenure as president … He has nothing new to offer Ghanaians. It is the same old record; same old story,” he said on Asempa FM on Monday.

Former President John Dramani Mahama is yet to declare his intentions to contest the fiagbearership of the NDC ahead of 2020 elections.

According to him, though his focus is to contribute towards the restructuring and reorganization of the NDC to make it a strong force, some of his supporters have consistently urged him to contest.

This has come at a time five NDC stalwarts including Second Deputy Speaker and MP for Nadowli-Kaleo, Alban Bagbin, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Trade and Industry; Mr Sylvester Mensah, former boss of the National Health Insurance Authority, have all declared their intentions to lead the NDC.

Others are Professor Joshua Alabi and former Member of Parliament for La-Dadekotopon and Nii Amasah Namoale.

But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Monday, Mustapha Hamid said the NPP will not sweat over Mr. Mahama’s candidature but rather pay attention to any of the new entrants.

“We will waste no time on Mr. Mahama; rather, we will pay attention to someone who has not contested the presidency before because that person may have innovative ideas to rule this country but not Mr]Mahama. For us, Mr. Mahama is a cool chop”, he added.
