MUSIGA Race: Ras Caleb promises 1 region-1 band

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Ras Caleb Appiah, has promised a dedicated music band for every region if elected as the MUSIGA President in the upcoming elections.

He said the bands will serve all artistes in the various regions.

They will be paid by MUSIGA.

He made the statement on Radio Waa in the Upper West Region on Monday, 27 May 2019, as part of his regional campaign tour.

Ras Caleb said: “If artistes set their own band, they’re going to take care of every fee of each person, so, the artiste cannot concentrate on his work as an artiste but if we have the regional bands which the members are being taken care of, they [band members] won’t ask you, the artiste, for anything because they’re there for a job”.

He said the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces and other institutions have bands and, so, wondered why musicians in the country do not have such dedicated bands.

2019 is an election year for MUSIGA and the race to replace Bice Osei Kuffour, also known as Obuor, is getting competitive.

Some notable members of the organisation have started filling for various positions and Ras Caleb, who will be competing against veteran highlife singer Bessa Simons for the MUSIGA Presidency, said that musicians are gold mines which should be harnessed to generate money for MUSIGA.

“If you have gold and you don’t dig it and you don’t refine it, you won’t have that gold. [For] MUSIGA, you may say we don’t have money but the musicians are gold that needs to be mined. Presently, I will say, yes, we don’t have money but we have avenues that can make money if certain things are done rightly. If money is given to us and we mismanage it, we can’t get it. Presently, I cannot say we are rich or not rich but what I know is we are gold which needs to be mined, we have it as a union or as individual artistes but we need to do things right,” he stressed.
