Kurt Okraku proposes special Sports Police Unit to combat hooliganism at match venues

GFA Presidential hopeful Kurt Okraku has proposed a solution to the age old issue of hooliganism that has consistently dented the image of Ghana Football over the years.

As Joshua Cudjo Nyatsidzi rightly states in his piece ‘Hooliganism: The Downside Of Ghana Football’ which was published by The Herald on May 10, 2019;

‘Fans of various teams in Ghana resort to hooliganism as a way of airing their views before, during or after a game. Hooliganism has not only being happening in the Premier League and Division Leagues but the National Women’s League has had its fair share of the barbaric act.

Most fans of Ghanaian clubs have hooligan tendencies and are quick to act at the slightest provocation. Instead of sideling fans of some teams to lambast them, lets us instead look to condemn the act and find lasting solutions to it.’

It is in light of this that Kurt Okraku has offered a very sound solution as captured in his ‘Game Changing’ manifesto which was launched on Tuesday.

Speaking in an interview with Angel FM, the Dreams FC Chief said his administration will oversee the creation of a special Sports Police Unit that will focus on league centers if elected into office.

“I will liaise with the Ghana Police hierarchy to create a special Sports Police Unit that will specifically focus on restoring sanity at football centres.

The administration will also institute the steward system to keep fans in check like it happens in Europe and elsewhere. But fundamentally, we will educate and sensitize fans on the need to comport themselves at the stadium”
