Kone eager to avenge 1998 defeat

Burkina Faso defender Bakary Kone feels that Wednesday’s semifinal clash against Egypt is a perfect opportunity to avenge the 1998 result of the same tie.The Etalons lost 2-0 to the Pharaohs who went on to emerge champions after defeating South Africa 2-0 for their fourth Afcon title.

Kone recalls watching this game with his parents on television. He said, “I was still young. I watched the game on TV with my parents.”

“It was a competition that we hosted and being defeated by Egypt made us very sad. Personally, I have never played against Egypt but this is an opportunity for us to go to the final. We are ready for the challenge.”

The Malaga central defender is keen on writing history after the continental trophy escaped them in 2013 when they lost to Nigeria in the final in South Africa.

He said, “It is an important game because it is a semifinal. My teammates and I are ready to play this match and reach the final.”

Burkina Faso progressed from Group A along with Cameroon to the quarterfinals and saw off a strong Tunisia outfit to qualify for the last four.

Not many fancied the Burkinabe to make it this far but Kone insists that humility has been key to their successful campaign so far.
