Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul has warned of a serious threat of another war between the Kokombas and Nanumbas in the Northern Region over the detention and trial of a 26-year-old Kokomba man who injured a Nanumba person in apparent self-defense.

Hon. Nitiwul said the matter risks sparking a devastating tribal war which could surpass the proportion of the 1994 Kokomba-Nanumba war.

The young man allegedly used a crude metal instrument on his motorbike to inflict life-threatening wounds on the Nanumba man.

The victim was part of a mob that allegedly pounced on the 26-year-old Kokomba man in an attempt to get him to participate in an ongoing communal labour exercise.

Hon Nitiwul told Citi FM that he suspects the District Security Council, (DISEC) the District Chief Executive and the Judge trying the matter are colluding to jail the young man at all cost, a suspicion which he says is brewing tribal tension in the area.

According to Hon. Nitiwul the youngman’s tribesmen are threatening mayhem which could degenerate into a full blown war. He added that he has appealed to the Northern Regional Minister and the National Security Coordinator to intervene but none has bothered to show any concern.

“Why would DISEC be interested in an assault case between two individuals when the Chief of Makayelli who is also a Nanumba says he is not even interested in the case? Infact he even went to the police station to plead with them that this could cause problems in his area so they should forget about it. The care taker of the young boy, that is the boy’s uncle has gone there to beg them to forget about this matter because he is not interested. The man who organized the thing called Ogbani gbani has also gone there to tell them to forget about this matter because he is not interested but DISEC seems to be interested in this matter”.

“The information I am receiving is that after the two week remand the boy should be jailed for four years. Why would DISEC misuse political power like this? I am appealing to the National Security Coordinator that the calls I am receiving can cause problems in the area, I am pleading with the Northern Regional Minister to step into the case and let this case die, we don’t want another conflict in this area”.
