I’ll not be minister of football – Asiamah

Youth and Sports Minister-designate Isaac Asiamah has indicated he will ensure that all the sporting disciplines in the country get the necessary attention and funding.

He said he would not place too much premium on one discipline to the detriment of other sports.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday February 7, he said: “When I was nominated by His Excellency the President, I made this point emphatically that I am not going to be minister for only football but a minister for all the sporting disciplines.

“We have about 40 sporting disciplines in this country and for us we have numerous talents out there. There are young Ghanaians out there who could make a career out of some of these sporting disciplines, so our job is to ensure that we promote all these sporting disciplines.

“So, we have gone ahead to state in our manifesto that we are going to create a special desk at the Ministry of Youth and Sports to track the work of these other sporting disciplines, their progress, and also to invest heavily in these so-called lesser known sports.

“Elsewhere, rugby, cricket are their number one sports, so I don’t want to be using that expression of lesser known sports. We need to develop all the sporting disciplines; that is why in the manifesto we have gone ahead to state that we are going to create what we call youth in sports with special emphasis on women participation in sports.”
