As part of this year’s Ghana Institute of Journalism women’s week celebration, the Women’s Commissioner seeks to recognise and celebrate female students doing amazing things in their own small ways, thus the theme 'celebrating the greatness in small beginnings'
The Awards is named after Oheneyere Gifty Anti, an alumnus of the Ghana Institute of Journalism in honour of her contributions to women empowerment and how inspirational her life has been to women especially.
In an interview with the Women’s Commissioner Edna Boakye she said ‘’In a list of the most successful women in Ghana, Gifty Anti’s name will definitely appear in the first five. The host of one of the most famous television programmes in the country, Anti is an ace journalist who has practice journalism for the past 16 years and she is someone people look up to that is why we named the award after her’’
She went on to say that the Women's Commission owes it as a duty to aid female students in realizing themselves as important contributing resources to the advancement of the SRC, as well as helping to aspire to be great leaders.
Gifty Anti has won many notable awards such as the African Woman of Worth Awards and Queens Magazine awarded her with the “Influential Woman of the Year” award in 2012.
Also, the Global Center for transformation Leadership conferred on her an Honorary Doctor of Letters award in 2012. The same year she won two awards at the Radio and Television Personality Awards in Ghana.
