Education Minister wants teachers’ attackers prosecuted

Education Minister Lee Ocran is recommending the criminal prosecution of members of two communities who physically assaulted teachers of two schools.

The schools - Duffor and Agbekotsekope Methodist Basic schools in the Dangme West District are reported to be scoring poor grades in national examinations, following which some residents assaulted the teachers whom they blame for the poor results.

The schools have since been closed down and the teachers withdrawn, however Lee Ocran said a criminal prosecution of the perpetrators would be a just punishment because the barbaric act need not be entertained.

Mr. Ocran who has warned that the incident will derail efforts to post teachers to deprived communities, told Joy News he intends to apply to Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police for the prosecution of the perpetrators because he believed the offences are criminal.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers has also described the acts as barbaric and backward.
