The Omanehene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Oseadeayo Akumfi Ameyaw IV has hailed plans by government to create new regions from the existing ones, observing that it will harness the economic prospects of the county
There are already plans in place by the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo through the Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development, to separate Ahafo and Bono areas.
But the chief observed that two new regions could be created from the existing one and urged the powers that be to as a matter of seriousness consider such propositions reiterating the fact that it shall harness the economic prospects of the country.
At the celebration of the annual Yam festival of her mother the Omanhemaa Nana Afia Abrafi, the Paramount Chief urged the people in the proposed Bono East region to spread the good news and come out in their numbers to vote massively during the referendum in order to make their wish a reality.
It would be recalled that the President on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, received a petition for the creation of six regions from existing four.
According to sources, the regions are likely to come from Western, where Western North is expected to be created; Brong-Ahafo where two new regions – Brong East and West – are expected.
The Northern Region may also see two more regions and Oti Region is being created from the Volta Region.
However, whereas there is the strong need for the creation of new regions, the thorny issue is the location of the capitals.
So far, Sefwi Wiaso and Damango appear to have no challengers for their selection as possible capitals for two of the new regions.
The Council of State, after studying a report submitted to it by the Minister for Regional Reorganisation and Development, Dan Kwaku Botwe – following petitions from the chiefs and people of the Western, Northern, Brong-Ahafo and Volta Regions for the creation of new regions from their respective regions – said there is a substantial demand for the creation of new regions.
