By-election violence: Goosie Tanoh 'rescues' shooting victims

Aspiring presidential candidate of Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Goosie Tanoh has visited and sympathized with persons who were allegedly shot and beaten by vigilante group during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Goosie Tanoh who was among notable personalities who first condemned the heinous crime donated consumables items and an undisclosed amount of physical cash to the Victims currently receiving medical treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.

Goosie Tanoh in a statement read on his behalf by his Greater Accra regional campaign cordinator, Mawuyram Asai to the Victims called for swift investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of the inhuman act.

The presidential aspirant expressed worry for Ghana's future democracy, peace and security of the citizenry if such acts of lawlessness are allowed to continue without severe punishment.

Vigilante group allegedly sponsored by the government in power stormed the residence of the NDC candidate in the by-election and allegedly fired shots injuring at least six persons and disrupting temporarily, voting at the La Bawaleshie Presby polling station which was a stone throw from the house.

Some of the men were alleged to have assaulted the Member of Parliament for Prampram, Sam George, for questioning the violent shooting incident that forced the National Democratic Congress to pull-out of the by-election won by the New Patriotic Party candidate.

Various civil society groups and organisations including the UN agency for development, the UNDP, have unequivocally condemned the violent acts of the hooded men, and warned Ghana against complacency over its touted peaceful atmosphere.

Goosie Tanoh tipped by political pundits to beat former president John Mahama in the February presidential primaries of the NDC, assured the shooting victims "you can be sure that we are joined in the fight against political violence wherever and from whomever it originates from. We will not rest until all forms of violence and vigilantism are rooted from our National political life"

Goosie Tanoh stressed that his campaign team "will continue to fight a fair fight and are resolute in standing up to bullies, thugs and hired guns through the mobilization of the popular will and opinion for peace and security in our land".
