'Bail conditions calculated to detain him' – Adom-Otchere's lawyer slams OSP

Lenin Anane Adjei, lawyer of embattled former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has slammed the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over the bail conditions set for his client.

Adom-Otchere, the host of Metro TV's Good Evening Ghana, was detained by the OSP after he failed to meet the bail conditions of presenting two landed properties (of no specific value) registered in his name, following his arrest on charges related to an ongoing investigation.

Anane Adjei, in an interview with ChannelOne News on the evening of Thursday, July 31, 2025, accused the OSP of a deliberate ploy to keep his client in custody.

He claimed that the OSP set the bail condition of two landed properties in his client's name despite his informing them that he did not own a property in Ghana.

He said that the property the broadcaster currently lives in belongs to his mother and cannot be used to meet the bail condition.

"The challenge that the OSP has set is essentially to give the dog a bad name so that you can hang it, because it is unreasonable in the context of bail to require an accused person to produce properties in his own name. What the OSP is essentially saying is that persons who lack properties, or poor people in this country, cannot own or cannot make bail.

“The shocking fact is that without taking the profile of the suspects, the suspect indicated that he does not own any landed property. And so for the OSP to set two landed properties in his name as precedent for his bail condition is essentially concluding to hang him and detain him,” he said.

“So that condition for now cannot be met. It is unreasonable. But what other options are available to you to ensure that you secure his release? I mean, we are still discussing our options, but the bottom line remains that in the hierarchy of affairs, there will always be ranks lower than our courts.”

He added, “These conditions that have been set by the OSP are calculated to detain Paul Adom-Otchere and nothing else. It is solely calculated to detain him, whether for a night or two, and nothing else.”

The lawyer also indicated that the actions of the OSP are strange because law enforcement agencies usually do not ask for the properties of suspects when setting bail conditions, but rather ask for properties in the name of other people they can hold accountable in case the accused person escapes.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor detained Adom-Otchere and two others – Otchere Kwame Baffour Awuah, Group Executive, Commercial Services, GACL, and Albert Adjetey Adjei-Laryea, CEO of Devnest Systems – after they honoured an invitation by the OSP to answer questions over possible procurement breaches in the revenue assurance contract between GACL and a company owned by the proprietor of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).

The OSP indicated that the three men have been charged and were detained after failing to meet the bail conditions that were set for their release.
