Alleged mentally-ill man killed by police after threatening officers

A man suspected to be mentally ill has been shot dead after he stormed the Kwabeng Police Station with a machete in the Eastern Region.

According to the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the deceased besieged the police premises on Sunday, September 1st, threatening to kill officers on duty.

The two officers present fled the scene and called for reinforcement from the SWAT team at Akyem Kwabeng.

DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, narrating the incident to Citi News said the mentally-ill man was shot when he attacked one of the policemen in the station threatening to slash him with the machete he was holding.

The Policeman in an attempt to defend himself then shot at the mentally-ill man who was subsequently rushed to the hospital but died while receiving treatment.

“They tried to overpower him and in the process the mentally deranged man charged on one of the Policemen ostensibly to slash him with the machete to kill him and in the process the policeman discharged his firearm and he was hit. He [the mentally-ill man] was subsequently rushed to the University Government hospital but died while receiving treatment hospital.”

“The body has been quickly transported to the police hospital and investigations have commenced. We have transported the body there to have it preserved for autopsy. When the investigations are completed the matter will be made known to the public.”

The Police have been in the news this past week after two of their men were killed under bizarre circumstances on the Kasoa Budumburam road.

The killing of the policemen have led to a heightened increase in conversations on mainstream media on the protection of police officers in the country.
