Former mayor of the Greater Accra Region, Nathaniel Nunoo Amartefio, has hit out at former local government minister Kwamena Ahwoi for failing to ensure the proper political direction of the city during his tenure as local government minister.
Mr Nunoo Amartefio made this assertion on Conversation with Mike Eghan on EEZY 107.5 FM, that the current appointment of mayors by the president makes them accountable only to the presidents but not the people within their jurisdictions.
“Government under Rawlings administration had insisted on appointing mayors which is a great contradiction to Kwamena Ahwois’ of decentralising governments and giving people a role in ruling themselves.
“That’s a whole mantra of Kwamena Ahwois’ new plan for the local government as they decentralised as much as they could, but when it came to the political direction of the city, they still wanted to have a hand there and I think it failed because it has robbed the cities of the needed political direction”, he added.
According to him, the mayor is only responsible to the President who appointed him and not the people and until that is reversed, the situation will remain the same.
