TWISTS AND TURNS IN COURT

TUESDAY, JULY 5, 2005 -- One of the accused persons standing trial with Aryee Aryeetey (alias ‘Ataa Ayi’) and seven others for robbery, yesterday caused a stir when he claimed at the Fast Track High Court that Ataa Ayi was dead and was not the one being tried.

Nana Yaw Owusu, the first accused, told the court that the Ataa Ayi the prosecution was talking about had died from beatings at the police station.

Owusu, also known as Tony, changed his plead from not guilty to guilty to the charge of conspiracy and robbery.

When asked to narrate his role in the robbery, Owusu told the packed court, presided over by Justice P. Baffoe Bonnie, “I do not know any of the accused persons on trial with me. Those I committed the crime with are not here and I do not understand why they are appearing with me.”

Ataa Ayi and Owusu together with Yaw Asante Agyekum, popularly called Akpor, Frederick Lamptey Annum also known as Numoe, Spephen Nyarko, Samuel Kweku Annan, also known as Sammy Tugah, Raymond Ameh and Nana Osei Razak are standing trial for conspiracy and robbery. They are alleged to have robbed a businesswoman of 65,000 dollars and ¢45 million at gun point at Taifa Junction in Accra on February 5, 2003.
