WOMEN WEEP AS NOMINEE FAILS TO WIN VOTE
THURSDAY, 30TH JUNE, 2005 -- There was a spontaneous expression of disappointment by a crowd of women present at the election of the district chief executive of Karaga in the Northern Region when it was announced that the President’s nominee had failed to secure the assembly’s approval.
Most of them shed tears when the verdict was announced by the electoral officer. The women, believed to be supporters of Mr Baba Wahab, the nominee had thronged the assembly, cladding white, apparently in anticipation of his confirmation by the assembly. Mr Wahab polled 19 out of the 30 votes, short of the two-thirds required to pull through.
The northern regional minister, Alhaji Boniface Abubakari Saddique, earlier advised the assembly members to bury their political differences and unite for the smooth functioning of the assembly.
“As a new district, it is important to forge ahead in unity for development,” he stressed. Mr Wahab said he was confident that he would be able to secure the required two-thirds in the second ballot.
