DEPUTY MINISTER TOURS NEW TIMES

The Deputy Minister for Information, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway today paid a familiarization tour to the New Times Corporation (NTC), publishers of the Ghanaian Times and the Weekly Spectator.

Interacting with the management, Hon. Botchway said government respects press freedom, and will not interfere with the work of the corporation.

Press freedom, she noted, goes with responsibility and appealed to them to ensure balance in their work, since the corporation is a public institution.

The Deputy Minister assured the NTC of the ministry’s support and said it will do everything possible to help the corporation to achieve its aim. She also assured the staff of the ministry’s readiness to fulfil promises made by the Minister of Information, Hon. Dan Botwe when he paid a similar visit to the corporation.

The Managing Director of the NTC, Mr. Nanabanyin Pratt, said the old web offset printing machine purchased almost 20 years ago, has broken down, and the newspapers are currently printed elsewhere hence the change of size of the papers.

The Minister was told that for the past five years, the corporation has had no interference from government, and has also made some modest gains from ¢2 billion loses to a net profit of ¢300,000,000.00.

It is targeting a profit margin of one billion cedis this year over sales of its publications. Mr. Pratt appealed to government to expedite action on proposals submitted by the management to enable them purchase a new printing machine.

The deputy minister was conducted round the editorial and printing sections led by Mr. Pratt and other senior officers.
