S. FRAUD OFFICE PROBES TAIN OVER CORRUPTION CHARGES
FRIDAY, 13TH MAY, 2005 --The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has started investigations into alleged corruption at the newly-created Tain District of the Brong-Ahafo Region in relation to a contract award valued at ¢2.5 billion.
It is also investigating non-payment of contract sums to contractors who refused to pay kickbacks on the assembly projects executed by them as well as illegal payments to some assembly and non-assembly members.
Those being questioned include the district co-ordinating director, Ibrahim Acheampong, and the district finance officer, Atta Kenteku.
The allegations were contained in a resolution by some people in the district and copied to various agencies including the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the Head of Civil Service, the Auditor-General, the Serious Fraud Office and the Bureau of National Investigations.
Dated April 15, 2005, and signed by Michael Fosu Mensah as their spokesman, the resolution demanded the immediate suspension of the district co-ordinating director, Ibrahim Acheampong “to ensure that the stays away from the investigations.”
It said “the people of Tain fought for a separate district to enable the area to see accelerated development and not for a few people to milk the District Assembly.”
The paper on April 22 published a story in which Mr Acheampong was accused, among other things, of failing to release funds meant for the implementation the national health insurance programme in the district.
This is said to be the result of a misunderstanding between him and the chairman of the working group. Mr Acheampong was also alleged to have refused to heed to a letter by the works sub-committee of the district.
