SPECIAL BODY TO SUPERVISE WORK AT HARBOURS
WEDNESDAY, 30TH MARCH, 2005 -- President J.A. Kufuor has directed that a specialized authority be set up to co-ordinate all activities at the country’s harbours to prevent the recurrence of last Friday’s fire at the PSC yard in Tema. He said such a body should include experts from all the agencies operating at the harbours.
President Kufuor gave the directive when he visited the Tema harbour yesterday to inspect the damage caused by the fire. No official of the Tema Shipyard and Drydock Limited, the company with oversight responsibility for ships at the harbour, was present at the time of the visit but the President interacted with the staff.
President Kufuor advised workers on other vessels to exercise extreme caution when mending ships because of the proximity of the Shipyard to TOR. He advised the Owusu Nsiah Committee to do a thorough investigation into the fire outbreak and submit its report within the stipulated time.
Dr Kofi K. Sarpong, chief executive officer of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) reassured that there would not be any shortage of fuel as a result of the fire outbreak at the Tema Harbour.
The Government has set up a seven-member committee of enquiry to investigate the cause of the fire outbreak. The committee chaired by Nana Owusu Nsiah, immediate past inspector-general of police, has two weeks to complete its work.
