NURSES BODY SHUTS DOWN TWO SCHOOLS

TUESDAY, 22ND MARCH, 2005 -- The Nurses and Midwives Council yesterday closed down two nurses training institutions in Accra for operating without approval. The institutions are Kings Health College at Awudome Estate and Dr Martin Luther King Nursing Training College at Odorkor.

The council explained that as the legally mandated organisation in charge of accrediting such institutions, it had not issued any accreditation to the two schools. It, therefore, asked them to stop operating until they are accredited. Kings Health College offers a six-week course in healthcare assistant programme, while Dr Martin Luther King Nursing Training College offers a three-year programme in registered general nursing (RGN).

The director of the Kings College, Ms Abena Ampofo-Gyekye, promised to abide by the council’s directive and get the institution accredited. Ms Ampofo-Gyekye said she contacted the Ministry of Health and the council sometime ago for accreditation.

At the Martin Luther King Nursing Training College there was not much activity as the students are on vacation. The director, Dr K. Duah, was said to be out of the country. Ms Veronica Darko, acting registrar of the Nurses and Midwives, Council told the press after the exercise that until the two institutions satisfied the requirements of the council they would not be allowed to operate.

She said last Friday the council had information that the Kings Health College had sent a request to the La Hospital for 25 students to do their practical attachment and that another school was also operating at Odorkor.

Ms Darko said the council move swiftly to investigate the reports and after the existence of the schools had been established it was decided that their operations be suspended pending the proper registration and accreditation of the institutions.

She directed Dr Martin Luther King Nursing Training College to stop using the green uniform prescribed for institutions offering GRN, since they have not been accredited by this institution and the National Accreditation Board, it is not proper for them to use such uniforms,” she explained.

Ms Darko said that the council would monitor activities of new and existing training institutions to ensure professionalism in their activities.
